New medical research is being carried out all the time and the latest study has revealed that gastric bands could be the best way of keeping overweight teens healthy – and stopping adult obesity before it begins.

The amazing findings came from a team of scientists at Monash University and the Royal Children’s Hospital, both in Melbourne, Australia. The results have been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), and could change the way gastric bands are used.

The scientists looked at two groups of overweight teenagers and compared the difference in weight-loss between those put on a healthy diet and exercise plan, and those given a gastric band.

Those on the healthy lifestyle programme lost 13 per cent of their extra weight, while the group fitted with a gastric band lost, on average, 80 per cent.

Gastric Band Info, like most leading obesity surgery specialists in the UK, currently only fits Lapbands to adults, but could this new research change the future of obesity surgery in the UK?

No instant changes to gastric band policy

Gastric Band Info is an advice service and weight-loss surgery provider, offering gastric band, gastric balloon and gastric bypass procedures.

A spokesman for the site said: “Although we have no immediate plans to change our ‘strictly adult-only’ gastric band policy, this research is fascinating and offers a possible insight into the changes that could be coming in the future.”
